What is so special about the West?

Is the West special? If so, how did it get that way? Why is it in the West that the key developments have occurred throughout our history?

And what do the answers to those questions tell us about the world in which we live now and the world we should strive to create?

Will the West continue to win or is it in decline relative to other civilisational models? Are the contradictions of democracy and of capitalism simply too great?

Is there a clash of civilisations? Need there be?

Few articles in the typically-staid academic field of international relations have provoked as much spilled ink as Harvard scholar Samuel Huntington’s 1993 “A clash of civilizations?” Yet, with each passing year, it seems, at least prima facie, to become more relevant. Even at the time, there were warnings that such a persoective might beome a self-fulfilling prophesy. Is that what has happened?
